Introduction

A youth centre on the coast of Tharangambadi, reading the spatial memory of the Danish Fort and the openness of the beachfront. Courtyards, transitional verandas and slatted timber screens compose a sequence of rooms that opens toward the sea, for gathering, recreating, exhibiting and listening.

The Idea

The fort taught us about wall and courtyard; the beach about horizon and threshold. The project reads these two scales together. A compound of pitched roofs and shaded edges that slows movement, frames the sea, and leaves room for the everyday life of a small coastal town.
